Invasive alien species are a main driver of biodiversity loss across the world, they have severe negative impacts on biodiversity, health and economic activities. Article 8(h) of the Convention on Biological Diversity states that,
‘Each contracting Party shall, as far as possible and as appropriate, prevent the introduction of, control or eradicate those alien species which threaten ecosystems, habitats or species’. In line with this, the Conference of the Parties has identified Invasive alien species as a crosscutting issue and has produced a number of decisions
Decisions on invasive alien species through the years.
In addition, The Kunming Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework which was adopted in 2022, with the aim to
halt and reverse biodiversity loss to put nature on a path to recovery (...), has a Target focused on invasive alien species (
Target 6) which is meant to be achieved by 2030.
