Capacity-Building and Development

Biodiversity Capacity-Building and Development Forum

The Conference of the Parties, in its decision 15/8 of 19 December 2022, requested the Executive Secretary to convene, in collaboration with partners, a forum to facilitate networking and sharing of experiences, good practices and lessons learned in capacity-building and development (CB&D) for biodiversity, and to organize events to showcase technical and scientific cooperation (TSC) initiatives, technologies and opportunities.

Each forum, to be organized back-to-back with a meeting of the Subsidiary Body on Implementation held in each biennium during the period 2024-2030, will focus on different themes related to the implementation of the Convention and its Protocols, including the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).

The Biodiversity Capacity-Building and Development Forum will bring together representatives of Parties, indigenous peoples and local communities, women and youth, non-governmental organizations, private sector, academia and other relevant stakeholders involved in CB&D and TSC.

Objectives of the Forum

  • To facilitate the sharing of experiences, best practices and lessons learned in the design and implementation of national CB&D action plans, programmes and projects among relevant stakeholders, experts and practitioners;
  • To review CB&D needs and challenges identified by Parties and relevant stakeholders, and discuss possible ways to address them;
  • To identify overlaps and gaps in the geographic and thematic coverage of CB&D and TSC initiatives;
  • To foster coordination and cooperation among Parties, indigenous peoples and local communities, CB&D providers and other relevant stakeholders;
  • To promote partnerships and synergies in the design and implementation of CB&D and TSC initiatives.

Expected Results

The Forum is expected to contribute to:
  • a better understanding of CB&D and TSC needs, good practices and conditions contributing towards the effective implementation of national biodiversity strategies and action plans (NBSAP) and the KMGBF at the national level;
  • greater coordination and synergies among the various initiatives and partnerships supporting implementation; and
  • opportunities for forging and strengthening partnerships and developing collaborative initiatives and projects.
