Side Event

Strengthening capacities to combat poaching and the illegal wildlife trade in support of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets

Organizer
Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GIZ TRAFFIC, the wildlife trade monitoring network

Date and Time
13 October 2014 18:15 - 19:45

Meeting
Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

The current dimension and growth in the illegal trade in wildlife products pose a significant risk both to the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and to social and economic development. Past and recent successes in conservation, protected area management and the governance of natural resources are being increasingly undermined and present an additional threat to the achievement of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets. This side event brings together experts and practitioners from different backgrounds and countries to present and explore examples and opportunities on how to strengthen capacities to reduce the illegal trade in wildlife products and leverage their contribution in support of the Aichi Biodiversity Targets and the CBD Strategic Plan 2011-2020.
