Twelfth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity

Drawing example from India, the side event will present how Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) can be applied as a tool for integrated and inclusive planning and development of coastal and marine protected areas (PAs) and delineating and managing eco-sensitive zones(ESZ) around PAs for nature/ biodiversity protection and for meeting bonafide needs of the local populations. The panelists from the Government of India/ Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change, the Wildlife Institute of India and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (SEA project and Biodiversity Program) will share their experiences so far in applying the SEA approach in India, followed by a panel discussion on how is SEA suited for reducing conflicts of interests in development planning in and around coastal and marine PAs. The event will attract national governments, regional policy-makers and developers.
