Eleventh meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 11)
Brazil has one of the highest rates of biodiversity and is considered one of the mega-diverse countries. Currently, the country is experiencing a time of economic stability and growth, where development policies are a priority of the current government. Discussions on the new Forest Code, the licensing of mega projects of infrastructure and exploitation of natural resources, reduction of conservation units in Amazonia for the construction of large hydroelectric plants, among others, demonstrate the complexity of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and respect for human rights in a developing country. The proposed side event seeks to share critical reflections on the current Brazilian reality, regarding the challenges to biodiversity conservation in Brazil.
