LARGE-SCALE BIOLOGICAL COLLECTIONS - RESEARCH CENTRES FOR CAPACITY BUILDING AND TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER IN SUPPORT OF THE CBD

Organizer
SCBD, CSP, CETAF/EDIT

Date and Time
20 October 2010 16:30 - 18:0

Meeting
Tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP 10)

Large-scale biological collections such as natural history museums and botanical gardens play a crucial role not only as centres of international biodiversity research, but also for providing expertise and relevant resources, and in building capacity for Parties to better fulfill their obligations under the Convention. They also contribute to the dissemination of knowledge on species, past and present. Senior representatives for member institutions of the CBD's Consortium of Scientific Partners (CSP) and the Consortium of European Taxonomic Facilities (CETAF) jointly with the European Distributed Institute for Taxonomy (EDIT) will present prime examples from a range of projects and activities in support of the Convention, particularly at the international level. A special focus will be on successful mechanisms for capacity building and technology transfer, relevant for biodiversity conservation as well as for sharing benefits from access to biological resources/materials.
