USAID’s Biodiversity Programs: International Development through Conservation Action

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) invests more than $US 200 million per year in biodiversity conservation in approximately 60 countries. For more than 30 years, USAID has supported projects that promote conservation of species and habitats in ways that reduce poverty and improve human well-being. In recent years, USAID has worked with local communities, government institutions and international partners to improve the management of more than 100 million hectares of highly biodiverse areas. Activities are developed to directly address threats to biodiversity and monitor conservation progress. Programs address poverty alleviation and development objectives by strengthening community access to and governance of resources and increasing sustainable livelihood options for those in critical resource areas. This side event will present an overview of USAID’s approach and current funding priorities. Discussion will include examples of site-specific and multi-country programs in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
