International Biodiversity Day, 22nd May 2003
As part of the International Biodiversity Day celebrations in the UK, the city of Hull played its part in raising biodiversity awareness.
The Hull Biodiversity Partnership and the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust had a display, mini pond with tadpoles and a range of biodiversity literature on a stall at Princes Quay Shopping Centre, right in the heart of the city.
Many people showed a keen interest and passed on valuable information about some of the target species in their local area. To encourage them to do more for themselves to increase Hull’s biodiversity, the partnership gave away free seed kits to encourage local people to plant local species, which are attractive in themselves, but are also food plants for a number of butterflies and other insects.
The International Biodiversity Day poster, kindly sent on by the secretariat, was also prominently displayed and much admired, with extra copies being requested by a few very keen individuals!
