The Biodiversity Partnership Mesoamerica is a dynamic platform that aims to promote innovative initiatives through public-private partnerships to improve the state of biodiversity in the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor and the Dominican Republic. The management model that BPM promotes will contribute to achieve the needed coherence to promote sustainable investments in Mesoamerica and the Dominican Republic. An important aspect of investments under the umbrella of BPM is to take into account the essential elements of sustainable development, such as biodiversity conservation and the adoption of mitigation measures, particularly climate change adaptation. Participation in this dynamic platform offers its members from Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama and the Dominican Republic a high reputation and a global network for the exchange of experiences, new business opportunities and political dialogue at a high level.

The BPM emerged from an initiative between the REWE Group (supermarket chain with annual sales of 43.5 billion Euros in 14 countries in Europe that drives the green products market), Chiquita Brands Int. (banana supplier for REWE), CORBANA (Costa Rica's marketer for bananas from the Atlantic) and the German cooperation agency GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), who formed a public-private partnership to develop a pilot project with common objectives designed to protect wetland areas, mountain forests and critical watersheds of the provinces of Talamanca in Costa Rica and Bocas del Toro in Panama.

Current corporate partners include: Chiquita Brands Int., Bank of Central America (BAC- Credomatic), Dole Tropical Products, National Banana Corporation (CORBANA), COOPEDOTA R.L., Green Valley Group, ECOM TRADING, Clean Fuels & Energy (C-Fela) and Forest Finance, non-governmental organizations, such as Rainforest Alliance, National Association for the Conservation of Nature (ANCON), Indigenous and Peasant Association Coordinator of Communal Agroforestry in Central America (ACICAFOC) and Neotropica Foundation, academic institutions, such as the Tropical Agronomic Research and Teaching Center (CATIE) and the University for International Cooperation (UCI), and governmental institutions such as the Central American Integration System / Central American Commission on Environment and Development (SICA / CCAD) and the National Commission for Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (CONABIO) of Mexico. Furthermore, the BPM participates in global policy dialogues on the subject as part of the board of directors of the Global Business and Biodiversity Alliance promoted by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD).

The BPM implements the programme “Support to the Mesoamerican Biodiversity Alliance”, funded by the German Ministry of Cooperation (BMZ) and the German Development Agency GIZ (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit), in order to strengthen synergies that benefit the private sector generating business options, which at the same time promote the biodiversity conservation in nine countries.
