The Union Ministry of Environment & Forests requested all the 33 State Governments and Union Territories to observe this Day by undertaking activities such as drawing/painting competition for school children, organizing exhibitions, seminars, symposia, including distribution of biodiversity resource materials. In addition, the premium survey organizations and the other Centres of Excellence relevant to biodiversity such as the Botanical Survey of India, Zoological Survey of India, G.B. Pant Institute of Himalayan Environment & Development, Salim Ali Centre for ornithology and Natural History, Wildlife Institute of India, Centre for Environmental Education and CPR Environment Education Centre, were also requested to celebrate the Day.
Several State Governments and the above organizations celebrated this Day by conducting various awareness programmes like seminars, group discussions, drawing, painting, essay and quiz competitions by involving NGOs, youths, women and all sections of people.
