The CBNRM programme operates under a favorable legal framework. It receives support from national government, non governmental organisations, donor community and other partners. It requires cooperation and commitment at conservancy level (local level), with ongoing support in resource management (including financial management). Continued financial and technical support to implement decentralization plans are needed as well as investments into capacity development at all levels.
The CBNRM and i.e. conservancy approach provides local communities with an institutional base for natural resource management and coordinated development activities.
At a national level, conservancies contribute significantly to Namibia’s commitments to the conservation of biodiversity. Hotspots of endemism, for example, are situated along the western edge of Namibia’s western escarpment, which fall outside the state protected area network, however significant proportions fall within the area of conservancies with a certain level of protective status. Conservancies function as wildlife corridors, protecting corridor areas adjacent to Protected Areas through which wildlife can move.
Conservancies act as a vehicle for international partnerships through tourism enterprises with local, national and international developing partners. Additional livelihood benefits are currently being explored, including the development of biodiversity products.
