Expected Outcomes and Benefits

Expected Outcomes and Benefits:

  • Facilitating the achievement of at least six out of the eight elements of Target 11 with attendant multiple benefits;
  • Providing realistic baseline data for the design of the post-2020 global biodiversity framework;
  • Putting in place a sustained capacity building mechanism in each sub-region to continue implementing and effectively managing protected areas, and contribute to sustainable development;
  • Achieving a milestone in the history of the Convention with discernible and tangible outcomes not only in terms of achieving agreed targets but generating multiple benefits, including increased resilience and healthy natural systems, and life in harmony with nature;
  • Showcasing synergies between the implementation of actions for Achieving Aichi Biodiversity Target 11 and the requirements of multilateral environmental agreements (MEAs) and other globally agreed goals and targets (e.g. SDGs, Paris Agreement on Climate Change, Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction etc.).

Progress in Target 11 contributes to major MEAs including:

  • United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD);
  • World Heritage Convention (WHC);
  • Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS);
  • Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES);
  • Ramsar Convention on Wetlands;
  • United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
