More than sixteen years after UNCTAD launched the BioTrade Initiative with the aim of promoting trade and investment in biodiversity as a means of furthering sustainable development, a number of countries, regions and national and international stakeholders have made remarkable progress in embracing BioTrade concepts and principles as integral parts of their strategies. BioTrade is currently implementing 8 national programmes in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) is a semi-autonomous institution that was established by an Act of parliament in May 1995 and became operational in December 1995. NEMA is therefore specifically mandated by the National Environment Act (NEA), Cap. 153 as the principal agency in Uganda charged with the responsibility of coordinating, monitoring, supervising and regulating all environmental management matters in the country.
