Science Film Festival

The Science Film Festival is an annual ASEAN initiative bringing together entertainment, education and facilitating cultural exchange. The festival is the largest event of its kind in the world and takes place from November 16 - 30, 2010 in Cambodia, Laos, Indonesia, Thailand and the Philippines. The theme this year is biodiversity in partnership with the UN International Year of Biodiversity. The festival acts as a multi-disciplinary platform uniting the Goethe-Institut, the French Embassy, UNESCO and the respective ministries of education and science in the participating countries in an ongoing effort to encourage science education particularly through audiovisual media in the region, with the ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity as special partner in 2010, merging several related activities intended to raise widespread awareness amongst young people in Southeast Asia about the issue.

Wild Elephant Lover Club

Wild Elephant Lover Club was established by a small group of researchers who work on wild elephants and other large herbivores in Thailand and people who understand the important roles and functions of wildlife in the ecosystem of tropical forests. In addition, the elephants have been important in the Thai society for more than 700 years; in culture, religion, politics, beliefs, arts, spirit, and economy; especially the status of war animals, beast of burden, and timber elephants in the past to attractive animal in tourism at the present time. Even once in 1593, the independence of the country was made by the “fighting on the elephant back” by the Kings in the past. Therefore, elephant conservation is responsibility of the all Thai people to get strongly involve in order to prevent them from extinction. The club was established to conduct wild elephant preservation activities and to be the centre of everybody who love and wish to help the wild elephants. The established day was on 13 March 2008, because this day in 1963, the committee of the Royal Forest Department agreed to select white elephant as the national symbolic animal of the country. Since then, March 13 of every year is the 'Thai Elephant Day'.
