This Department of Conservation (DOC) site has information about the protection of New Zealand's natural and historic heritage, how and where you can enjoy public conservation places and how to get involved in conservation.

Landcare Research New Zealand Ltd (Manaaki Whenua) undertakes research and development to protect and enhance land environments – natural, productive and urban. Extensive scientific programmes include documenting, protecting and restoring indigenous biodiversity; increasing the effectiveness of conservation; and raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity and ecosystem services to our health and well-being, with a strong focus on sustainability. We are custodians of nationally-significant biological reference collections (invertebrates, plants, fungi, micro-organisms from plants) with sizable collections from the Pacific Islands. Events for 2010 will include a 24-hour “BioBlitz – finding nature in the city”.

QEII National Trust promotes sustainable land use and helps private landowners in New Zealand protect significant natural and cultural features on their land through open space covenants. Open space covenants are established voluntarily by landowners. They help safeguard forever special features like landscapes, forest remnants, wetlands, lakes, threatened species habitats, geological features and cultural heritage sites.

In 1906 Wellington Zoo became the first zoo in New Zealand.
