For two of the “Last Survivors” in Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic), the Hispaniolan solenodon and Hispaniolan hutia, a Darwin-Initiative funded project was launched in October 2009. It is a collaborative effort between Dominican and UK partners. Its goal is to conduct field research on these poorly known species to assess their status, identify their conservation needs, to develop monitoring tools and to plan their long-term conservation.

The Hispaniolan solenodon (Solenodon paradoxus) and hutia (Plagiodontia aedium) are the only two survivors on the once rich mammal fauna of Hispaniola (Haiti and Dominican Republic) The “Last Survivors” project is a collaboration between British and Dominican conservation organisations which enables long-term conservation of these two endangered species through a strengthened evidence-base, large-scale monitoring, improved awareness and participatory species action planning.
