In Japan, the International Day for Biological Diversity was celebrated through events held in Tokyo, Nagoya, Toyooka and Hokkaido.

In Tokyo, a symposium on “Biodiversity and its Interdependence with Agriculture, Food and SATOYAMA” was held, co-organized by the United Nations University, United Nations University Institute of Advanced Studies, Global Environment Information Centre, Ministry of the Environment, and the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. In addition, the Forestry and Forest Products Research Institute and Waseda University Environmental Research Institute held a joint symposium entitled, “Biological Diversity in Satoyama – Harmonizing Forests and Agriculture”.

In Nagoya City, a Commemorative Symposium for the International Day for Biological Diversity was hosted by the COP10 Promotion Committee with support from the Chubu Regional Environmental Office of the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, entitled “Businesses and Biodiversity”. In addition, events were held at the Nagoya City Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

In Toyooka, Hyogo Prefecture, the venue of the G8 Environment Ministers Meeting 2008 that convened from 24 to 26 May, a symposium was held on the Oriental White Stork on the International Day for Biological Diversity, 2008. In addition to the symposium, “The Youth Summit for Environment in Kobe” was held on May 20 in conjunction with the G8 Environment Ministers Meeting..

In Hokkaido Prefecture, where the G8 Hokkaido Toyako Summit 2008 was convened, a “Biodiversity Symposium in Hokkaido” was held during the weekend of the IBD, on 24 May 2008. It was organized jointly by the Ministry of the Environment and the Japanese Institute of Landscape Architecture.
