REDD-plus & Biodiversity e-Newsletter The CBD Secretariat publishes a
REDD-plus & Biodiversity e-Newsletter on linkages between efforts for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation, and benefits to biodiversity and indigenous and local communities.
Series of workshops on biodiversity safeguards in REDD-plus The CBD Secretariat will organize a
series of regional consultations and capacity building workshops with the aim to consult effectively with Parties on the development of advice on relevant safeguards for biodiversity, so that REDD-plus actions are consistent with the objectives of the CBD and avoid negative impacts on and enhance benefits for biodiversity. The workshops aim to identify possible indicators to assess the contribution of REDD-plus to achieving the objectives of the CBD, and assess potential mechanisms to monitor impacts on biodiversity from these and other ecosystem-based approaches for climate change mitigation measures. The first workshop was held in Singapore in March 2011 and the next will take place in Quito, Ecuador from the 5-8 July 2011.
The International Day for Biological Diversity – forest biodiversity The United Nations proclaimed 22 May as the
International Day for Biological Diversity. 2011 the theme for this day is forest biodiversity, aimed at promoting a greater understanding and awareness of forest biodiversity issues. The CBD Secretariat will celebrate this special day within the context of 2011 as the International Year of Forests.
TEMATEA tool on international commitments related to forest biodiversity Following the request of the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, the CBD Secretariat is developing a new forest module on international commitments related to forest biodiversity. The tool will support a better and more coherent national implementation of forest-related international instruments. It will be launched on the International Day for Biological Diversity on 22 May 2011.
International Economic Forum of the Americas, Conference of Montreal, 6-9 June 2011 The Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity, in cooperation with the International Economic Forum of the Americas will hold a 2-day expert workshop on investments into forest ecosystem services, including the role of biodiversity for mitigating investment risks. The workshop will be organized in the context of the International Year of Forests 2011, and follow-up to the “International Day for Biological Diversity” (IDB) on May 22, which focuses on forest biodiversity. In the same context there will be a Panel Discussion at the 17th International Economic Forum of the Americas, Conference of Montreal on the topic “Biodiversity, Carbon, Water, and More: Investing in Forest Ecosystem Services”.
Second meeting of the CBD Liaison Group on Bushmeat The CBD Liaison Group on Bushmeat will meet in Nairobi to discuss options for small-scale food and income alternatives in tropical and sub-tropical countries based on the sustainable use of biodiversity, with the aim to support current and future livelihood needs and to reduce unsustainable use of bushmeat.
