The health of our planet is in Peril. The dangerous impacts of climate change are ever more apparent; biodiversity is declining at unprecedented rates; too many of our day-to-day practices and choices are still far from sustainable. The Global Environment Facility, the financing mechanisms for UN conventions on biodiversity, climate change, desertification and persistent organic pollutants, has played an important role in addressing these challenges over the past 20 years. Drawing on the strengths of UN agencies, multilateral development banks and other national and regional institutions, the Facility's efforts have shown that when resources are made available to developing countries, accompanied by careful planning at all levels, seemingly intractable problems can be solved. |
