Selection of a competent international organization
to carry out the functions of the Secretariat
of the Convention
The Conference of the Parties
1. Designates the United Nations Environment Programme to carry out the functions of the Secretariat
of the Convention while ensuring its autonomy to discharge the functions referred to in Article 24;
2. Decides that the functions of the Secretariat shall be carried out by the Secretariat that was provided
for under Article 40 of the Convention, until such time as the staff of the Secretariat have been appointed;
3. Requests the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme to select the
Executive Secretary of the Secretariat for the Convention in consultation with the Bureau of the Conference of
the Parties.
