Three open-ended inter-sessional meetings on implementation-related issues have been held to contribute to preparations for the Conference of the Parties.
Inter-sessional Meeting on the Operations of the Convention

Pursuant to decision IV/16, the Inter-sessional Meeting on the Operations of the Convention (ISOC) was held in Montreal from 28-30 June 1999. The purpose of the meeting was two-fold:
- To review the operations of the Convention and the programme of work, taking into account proposals made at the fourth meeting of the Conference of the Parties; and,
- To initiate discussion on issues related to access to genetic resources and benefit-sharing.
Open-ended Inter-sessional Meeting on the Strategic Plan, National Reports and Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity

At its fifth meeting, the Conference of the Parties established an inter-sessional meeting to consider:
- Development of the Strategic Plan;
- The second national reports; and,
- Means to support implementation of the Convention (decision V/20).
The Open-ended Inter-sessional Meeting on the Strategic Plan, National Reports and Implementation of the Convention on Biological Diversity (MSP) was held in Montreal from 19-21 November 2001. The meeting identified work to be carried out prior to the next Conference of the Parties and agreed on a number of recommendations, which were submitted to the sixth Conference of the Parties.
Open-ended Inter-sessional Meeting on the Multi-year Programme of Work of the Conference of the Parties up to 2010

By decision VI/28, the Conference of the Parties established the Open-ended Inter-sessional Meeting on the Multi-year Programme of Work of the Conference of the Parties up to 2010 (MYPOW). The meeting, which was held in Montreal from 17-20 March 2003, agreed on recommendations on the following issues:
- The outcome of the World Summit on Sustainable Development as it relates to the Convention;
- Implementation of the Convention and the Strategic Plan;
- The multi-year programme of work of the Conference of the Parties up to 2010;
- Legal and socio-economic aspects of technology transfer and cooperation; and,
- The international regime on access and benefit-sharing.
Recommendations from the meeting were submitted for consideration at the seventh Conference of the Parties.
