Hamdallah Zedan
(1998-2005)
Hamdallah Zedan holds a BSc. (Pharmacy) and M.Sc. (Microbiology) from Cairo University and Ph.D. (Microbiology) from Montreal University. He has held various positions with United Nations and Cairo University. He is the former UN Assistant Secretary General/ Executive Secretary of the Biodiversity Convention from 1998 to 2005 and former Director of UNEP’s Biodiversity, Biotechnology, Biosafety and Genetic Resources programmes from 1984 to 1997.
He is Emeritus Professor of Microbiology and Immunology, Cairo University and Former Chairman and current Secretary of the Pharmaceutical Studies Committee Sector, Supreme Council of Universities, Egypt. From 2007 to 2013, he was the Chairman and Managing Director of the Egyptian Company for Sera, Vaccines and Drugs (VACSERA).
He supervised and directed research programmes leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. for more than 75 candidates and published more than 100 papers in various fields of research covering biodiversity, biosafety and intellectual property rights (IPR), recombinant DNA technology, vaccines and immunological products, microbial enzymes, radio-sterilization, microbial drug resistance, immobilized cell fermentation, mycotoxins, microbial contamination of pharmaceuticals. He is a member of many national and international scientific and advisory committees.
