Meeting on the International Day for Biological Diversity 21-22 May 2009, at Rama Gardens Hotel, Bangkok, Thailand
The Biodiversity Division, under the Office of Natural Resources and Environmental Policy and Planning, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, organized a two-day meeting to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity, under this year’s theme “Biodiversity and Invasive Alien Species”. Approximately 400 participants, from government organizations, provincial administrative authorities, academic institutions, business sector and representatives from indigenous communities, attened the meeting. Various topics regarding biodiversity and alien species were presented and discussed at the meeting, including:
- Top ten conservation challenges in Asia
- Overview on global invasive alien species status
- Cooperative Project between Asia and Europe on the prevention of invasive alien species
- Local approach towards alien species management in the Northeast, and Tha Chin river basin
- Measures to prevent, control and eradicate invasive alien species, and the list of alien species to be prevent, control and eradicate in Thailand
- Plants of significance in Thai culture and traditional livelihoods
- Indigenous and local communities and biodiversity management in highlands of Thailand
- Biodiversity hotspots in Surat Thani and Chum Phorn province
During the opening ceremony, a number of businesses were given awards for their significant contributions towards biodiversity conservation, restoration and sustainable management. The awarded companies include PTT Public Co. Ltd., (the Petroleum Authority of Thailand), Charoen Pokaphand Group, Toyota Motor Thailand Co. Ltd., Metropolitan Electricity Authority, Ratchaburi Electricity Generating Holding Public Co. Ltd., and Siam Forestry Industrial Co Ltd. Examples of works from the above-mentioned organizations were also presented in the meeting. Furthermore, the medias, especially from TV News, such as Channel 3, 5 and 11, and a number of newspapers have also reported the news and information of the meeting.
