In Bulgaria this year, as has become tradition during the past few years, the Ministry of Environment and Water (MOEW), with the help of NGOs and nature conservators, celebrated 22 May - the International Day for Biological Diversity – under the theme “Biodiversity and Agriculture”.

There are 15 regional inspectorates of Environment and Water (RIEW) under the MOEW. In eight of them, based in different cities across the country, various activities took place:

  • Veliko Tarnovo – Interactive presentation for pupils
  • Pleven and Lovech – Presenting information from the two regions to all media (TV and press); lectures for pupils and printing of posters
  • Vratza – happening near dam lake “Dubnika”. With the help of NGOs, the experts from RIEW – Vratza have prepared lectures and had arranged bird watching on the site of the dam, linking the theme of the day with the wetlands
  • Haskovo – At the local Ecological Information Center, presentations were given to pupils from different schools. The local youth centre showed Al Gore’s movie An Inconvenient Truth
  • Plovdiv – Lectures and causeries with pupils and with students from the Agricultural University, Department of Ecology and Environment Protection; Asenovgrad – NGO “Haberlea” celebrated IBD in the picturesque site, near the reserve “Chervenata stena”
  • Shumen and Targovishte – Presentations for pupils, eco-excursion and opening of the eco – path for disabled people in the nature park “Shumensko plato”
  • Stara Zagora – Together with participants from the NGO Federation of Nature Conservation - Green Balkans, presentations were given to students. A discussion on issuing the “Red book of the threatened plant and animal species” in the region also took place
  • Montana – Presentations and eco-excursion to the protected site of “Kitkata”. Pupils who took first place in the national competition “Let Nature Remain in Bulgaria”, organized by an initiative from Mtel, IMAX and WWF “Bulgarian – Carpathian Association”, were presented to the public. The winner, “The Climate Changes are Fact” – by Rangel Nikolov, later participated in the Balkan youth forum “Sandanski 2008”.
