Initiatives
In support to the implementation of the International Pollinators Initiative (decision VI/5, paragraphs 8 to 12), FAO has submitted a project proposal on the conservation and sustainable use of pollinators, for consideration of the Secretariat of the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
Several initiatives exemplifying international, regional and national level activities contribution to the International Pollinators Initiative have been implemented, including:
- The African Pollinator Initiative (API), one of the first regional networks, was formed in 1999 to facilitate Africa’s implementation of the IPI. Its Plan of action is based on four components, namely public awareness and education, placing pollination in the mainstream, conservation and restoration, and capacity building. The API organized an international workshop on pollinators and pollination, in May 2003 in South Africa, to develop a guide for policy makers on pollinator conservation and sustainable use (Pollinators and pollination).
- The Brazilian Pollinators Initiative (BPI), officially established during the biannual meeting of Bees in September 2000 (Brazilian Pollinators Initiative), aims to strengthen scientific and technological excellence on pollinators by means of an active network with a critical mass of resources and expertise.
- The European Pollinator Initiative (EPI), formed in 2000, aims to integrate and coordinate local, national and international activities relating to pollination into a cohesive network in order to safeguard the services provided by pollinators across the continent (EPI website).
- The North American Pollinator Protection Campaign (NAPPC) is an alliance of pollinator researchers, conservation and environmental groups, private industry, and state and federal agencies in Mexico, Canada and the United States. NAPPC's mission is to encourage the health of resident and migratory pollinating animals in North America (NAPPC website)
