UNEP/CBD Issue Papers

This UNEP/CBD issue paper series explores the interconnections between biodiversity and climate change. It is increasingly recognized that, on one hand, the increasing levels of atmospheric carbon responsible for climate change are affecting biodiversity on land, in freshwater and in the oceans. On the other hand, changes in biodiversity and ecosystem functioning also affect climate change. The underlying message is that healthy ecosystems—in other words, biodiverse ecosystems—can help societies adapt to climate change, and can play an important role in climate change mitigation. The papers in this series explain these concepts and proposals for addressing the challenges posed by climate change. The series was designed for decision-makers who need a quick grasp of the science and some suggested solutions.
