The IMG recently prepared a report entitled "Advancing the biodiversity agenda - a UN system-wide contribution" to help inform the formulation of future biodiversity targets by Governments. Under the Italian Presidency of the G8, the G8 Environment Ministers, together with the Ministers of Australia, Brazil, China, the Czech Republic and Sweden, as the respective current and upcoming Presidencies of the European Union, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, and participating international organizations, meeting in Syracuse, Italy, adopted the “Carta di Siracusa The Swedish Presidency of the European Union is prioritising biodiversity and the final meeting of the environment council adopted Council conclusions on international biodiversity beyond 2010. The presidency’s biodiversity website The General Assembly, at its 64th session, adopted a resolution which, inter alia, “Encourages all parties to the CBD to continue to contribute to the discussions leading to an updated strategic plan for the Convention to be adopted at the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties, bearing in mind that this strategic plan should cover all three objectives of the Convention, and emphasizes that the revision of the strategic plan is important for the enhanced implementation of the Convention;" The InterAcademy Panel on International Issues (IAP) Conference on Biodiversity and General Assembly, hosted by the Royal Society in London, UK, from 12 to 15 January 2010, assembled science academies and science and biodiversity policy experts to discuss issues related to implementation of the 2010 Biodiversity Target and post-2010 implementation. Click here The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity (TEEB) study is a major international initiative to draw attention to the global economic benefits of biodiversity, to highlight the growing costs of biodiversity loss and ecosystem degradation, and to draw together expertise from the fields of science, economics and policy to enable practical actions moving forward. The recent TEEB Climate Issues Update and TEEB for policy makers report The Ministry of the Environment of Japan, DIVERSITAS, Nagoya University, and the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) co-organized a scientific Pre-COP-10 Conference meeting (Nagoya, 21-22 March 2010) which considered the establishment of the development of the new CBD Strategic Plan and its 2020 targets, as well as a new assessment mechanism for biodiversity and ecosystem services (IPBES) and the further development of the global biodiversity observation network. A group of scientists involved in DIVERSITAS led by Professor Georgina Mace have prepared a paper on "Biodiversity targets after 2010" which is being published shortly in "Current Opinion in Environmental Sustainability".
