The Mexican Federation of Sanitation Engineering and Environmental Sciences A.C. (FEMISCA) prepared several articles on biodiversity in honor of the International Day for Biological Diversity. Some of these articles included subject such as: loss of species due to human activities, loss of forest area due to land use changes, and climate change displacing millions of people.

The Headquarters of the Zoological Parks of Mexico City celebrated the International Day for Biological Diversity by providing different activities in their zoos. Some of these activities included: video screenings, painting and art workshops, biodiversity presentations and other hands-on workshops.

In Chihuahua, an official ceremony with the President, Felipe Calderón, took place to celebrate IBD. In his speech, the President announced that Mexico signed an agreement to plant 1 billion trees worldwide, of which 250 million, one forth, will be in out country and of which 11 million will be within the state of Chihuahua.

He also announced the signing of an agreement between the federal and state government to invest almost 1 billion pesos for environmental protection in the State of Chihuahua. At the same time, he declared that 12 million pesos would be invested into seasonal employment, in the framework of the Program of Protected areas, in five zones of the state of Chihuahua.

Following the President’s address, the Governor of Chihuahua, José Reyes Baeza, affirmed the urgency of making a commitment to leave a healthy environment for the future generations, for which governments and society must take actions to preserve biodiversity.
