Launching of the National Campaign for Biodiversity Sigmar Gabriel, Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, launched the "National Campaign for Biodiversity" on the occasion of IBD. Its aim is to communicate to a broad public the importance of protecting the natural foundations of life. The establishment of a “nature alliance” consisting of prominent people from politics, trade and industry, science, civil groups, culture and media, will help convey the message and inform and motivate the public. Conference on Biological Diversity and Climate Change The Working Group on Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety of the CDU/CSU parliamentary group organized a conference on Biological Diversity and Climate Change, which took place on 7 May 2007 at the Bundestag. As the United Nations declared that the IBD theme this year would be biodiversity and climate change, following the international discussions between the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change and the Convention on Biological Diversity, participants were invited to discuss and analyze the interlinkages between biodiversity and climate.
Launching of a special ad-hoc working group on COP-9/MOP-4 The parliamentary group of Alliance 90/The Greens launched their special ad-hoc working group on COP-9 and COP/MOP-4 on the International Day for Biological Diversity. The working group will develop strategies for the conservation of biodiversity, as well as work on financial instruments and mechanisms for that purpose. They wish to ensure that the issue of biodiversity is the main focus in the environmental debate in parliament and among the general public.
20 Trees +10 Schools and Trees for the 2010 Biodiversity Target The German Youth-Multimedia project, Naturdetektive, of the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) organized a special “20 Trees +10 Schools and Trees for the 2010 Biodiversity Target” activity to celebrate the International Day for Biological Diversity. Ten schools from 10 different “CBD” countries planted – at the same time, in the same week, around the world – 20 native forest or fruit trees, on either their school grounds or an adjacent natural area. The countries participating in this event were: Canada, Denmark, Ecuador, Germany, Kenya, Republic of Iran, Mongolia, Palau, Federated States of Micronesia/Yap and Russian Federation. The Executive Secretary of the CBD signed special certificates for each of the participating schools.
