* Rwanda is popularly known as the land of a “thousand hills” and has “spectacular volcanoes” (six). This is reflected in the background of the artwork.
Biodiversity:
* Famous “mountain gorillas”, which are endangered species; the largest number in the world is found in the National Volcanoes Park (Parc National des Volcans), a protected area located in the Northern Province of Rwanda and consists of 125 Km2 of mountain forest and home to the six Virunga Volcanoes.
* Angola colobus, delightfully acrobatic arboreal monkeys which move in troops of several hundred. They are found in the Nyungwe National Parksituated in the majestic hills of southwestern Rwanda. Nyungwe forest is the largest “island” of montane forest remaining in east and central Africa
Culture:
* Dancers wearing grass wigs, carrying spears and shields performing the 'Dance of Heroes'. Traditionally, the dance was performed by returning warriors, celebrating victory in battle. |
