Biodiversity for Sustainable Development

UN Country Programming for the SDGs

In addition to the HLPF’s inter-governmental efforts under ECOSOC and with UNDESA support, the UN system, via the UN Sustainable Development Group (UNSDG), works to strengthen joint programming processes at the country level to promote UN coherence and alignment with national priorities. Part of this support is providing guidance to UN Country Teams and Member States in preparing UN Development Assistance Frameworks (UNDAFs) for joint programming, including through its mainstreaming, acceleration and policy support (MAPS) approach for the 2030 Agenda. The UNSDG, chaired by the UN’s Deputy Secretary General and supported by the UN Development Operations Coordination Office, unites the 32 UN funds, programmes, specialized agencies, departments, and offices that play a role in development, including UN Environment.

The Secretariat of the CBD has been active in providing policy support for the mainstreaming of biodiversity into development planning and exploring critical avenues for transformative change to accelerate progress toward the conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity, the very foundation for sustainable development.
