(Bilbao, Spain, 5-7 November 2001)
Public Education and awareness are basic instruments to reverse the loss of biological diversity; they are also fundamental in promoting the objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Public Education and Awareness will also assist Parties to the Convention in their integration of biological diversity into national strategies and country-driven activities.
As a follow-up to
decision V/17, paragraph 2, on Public Education and Awareness, a Consultative Working Group of Experts on Biological Diversity Public Education and Awareness, jointly established by UNESCO and the Secretariat of the Convention, is developing an operational framework and a specific strategy for the implementation of the Global Initiative on Biodiversity Public Education and Awareness called for in decisions V/17 and in IV/10.B.
The Consultative Working Group held two meetings, one in Paris, France, in July 2000 (
EPA-1) and one in Bergen, Norway (
EPA-2). The Consultative Working Group convened for the third time in Bilbao, Spain, from 5 to 7 November 2001 (EPA-3).
